How To Plan A Sustainable Wedding
Â
More than ever it is important to think about how our actions are affecting the planet and what small changes we can make to help make our beautiful home a cleaner, safer and happier place to live.
The team here at Emporella are very focussed on making the wedding world a more sustainable industry. This is because it is unfortunately quite apparent that the wedding industry alone contributes to a large amount of waste each year. More than you might think.
If you want to learn more about how you can plan a more sustainable wedding and what you can do to reduce the waste on your special day then have a quick read at my blog below.
I will tell you now that all the tips that I mention are ridiculously easy to carry out. Don't worry, you won’t need to click off simply because you think I am about to tell you to have a nudist wedding in the middle of your local field…that is not my plan!
Most of these ideas are little changes that can make a huge difference so have a look and see what you can do.
How To Plan A Sustainable Wedding
How Your Wedding Could Potentially Damage The Planet
Unfortunately, the wedding industry alone is responsible for a potential 4,910 tonnes of plastic that is getting poured into our oceans every year. That weight is equivalent to 47 blue whales! This can not keep happening.
According to the Sea Ocean Rescue the biggest offenders are:
- Plastic cups
- Water bottles
- Disposable Decorations
- Gift BagsÂ
- ConfettiÂ
- Wrapping & Favours
Each one of those offenders could easily be swapped out for something that is more eco-friendly.
And that is the aim of this blog. I want you to take a look at things a little deeper during the planning process and think how you could plan a more sustainable wedding. What swaps could you make? Is everything you’re buying necessary? Are you building up unnecessary waste? It takes a couple of seconds to rethink something.
What Could You Swap Out?
Now you have seen what the biggest offenders are, I am going to show you a few sustainable alternatives that we have available on Emporella’s online wedding marketplace that could make a big difference.
FOOGO Green's Tableware
This amazing brand has the most amazing sustainable tableware that is the perfect alternative to those paper plates that you lay out at the buffet.
The plates and cutlery have a natural woody texture that is perfect for a rustic themed wedding and are made from the fallen leaves of Areca palm trees. These leaves are inherently strong and highly durable, making them a perfect choice for eco-friendly dinnerware.Â
Designed by Mother Nature, no two plates are the same. Every piece of dinnerware is different and has its unique texture and pattern, just like the leaf it comes from.Â
Whether or not your wedding has any other rustic touches, this tableware is so much better than any other tableware you will find and you don’t need to worry about how they’re damaging the environment.
Don’t Forget The Straws
There is no doubt plastic straws are harmful to the environment. Paper straws, on the other hand, are not very functional. We have the perfect alternative - wheat straws.
Unlike paper straws, wheat straws do not go soggy in liquids so you'll be able to enjoy your drink for a lot longer. It's so annoying when you're half way through a drink and then the straw goes soggy. No one wants that!
The straws also decompose naturally in 2 to 4 weeks after use so it's like they were never here.
Wheat straws are 100% natural and there are no chemicals or harmful additives used in making them. This is as eco-friendly and sustainable as it can get.
Make Your Own Natural ConfettiÂ
Have you ever considered creating your own natural wedding confetti? I’m not talking about that paper confetti that always ends up littering the churchyards and streets for weeks, I’m talking about beautiful homemade natural wedding confetti made from your old dying flowers.Â
This confetti doesn't just look pretty, it is also a better alternative to the confetti you will find in the shops. It is made from 100% natural materials, meaning it will naturally disappear without leaving any damaging effects to the environment.
If you’re planning a sustainable wedding then find out how you can make your own natural confetti by clicking the button below.
A Gift Bag To Keep
It is very traditional for the couple to get gifts for their bridesmaids, inlaws and other significant members of their wedding party but how are you planning to gift them? Will it be in a gift bag? One of those plastic gift bags…
Of course that’s not your plan. I would never suspect you of that! But just in case you’re wanting an alternative Cristina Adami Design have some really lovely linen personalised gift bags.Â
The handmade sustainable linen pouch would be an ideal personalised gift bag, lingerie bag, bridal gift bag, bridal shoe cover or for any other anniversaries and birthdays to remember! Think how much money you could save over the years if you and a special friend just used the same bag to exchange gifts.Â
